Ray Scott was born on March 13, 1934 in Oswego, KS. Attending all black schools through the 8th grade, he next earned a diploma from an integrated Oswego High School in 1952, proudly the first in his family to graduate. While attending O.H.S. Ray was both an outstanding student and a decorated letterman, having starred in track, baseball, football, and basketball - a multiple threat! Upon graduation, Raymond was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Labette Community College in Parsons, KS, where he played baseball for the Cardinals until enlisting in the military in 1954. A veteran of the Korean War, Ray often mentioned his most memorable assignment was playing 3rd base for the U.S. Army Baseball Exhibition Team. Fondly known on the field as "Diamond Jim" and "Scotty", Ray recalled as a youth he and others would sometimes play "pick-up" ball in Baxter Springs, KS with baseball legend Mickey Mantle. Ray himself went on to play professionally for the Kansas City Athletics Minor League baseball team, often competing against Negro League greats such as Satchel Paige and Buck O'Neil. Interestingly, "Diamond Jim" was better known in midlife for his softball career - most notably for his big hits and outstanding fast-pitch. His famous underhanded wind-mill was once clocked at over 100 mph! A Christian man who never met a stranger, Scotty was rewarded in life with many honors and even many more friends. Most who knew him would agree he was near legendary in his prime, but Raymond would tell you his legacy was simply trying to be the world's best dad and grandpa. Mission accomplished!
